A theoretical liquid crystal elastomer model that mimics the elasticity of cat skin

Abstract A mathematical model for nematic liquid crystal elastomers is proposed that mimics the elastic response of cat skin where reorientation dermal fibres produces an increase in thickness direction under tensile stretch. To capture this unusual effect, uniaxial order parameter elastomer allowed to decrease then again, and critical stretch at which change monotonicity occurs director also rotates suddenly predicted. In addition, parameters are described by probability density functions their uncertainty propagated numerically predicted mechanical results.
